Responsibility, in so many ways, is the ultimate aim of all education that can truly be called education. This axiom is especially true of professional education and quintessential in medical education. No educational system yet devised has equalled medicine in using the method of "graduated responsibility" in such an effective, stairstep development. Within a few years, ingenuous college students become practicing professionals to whom society willingly grants license to bear and exercise lethal power on a daily basis.
For the most part, however, this deliberate development of responsibility is rarely in the forefront of consciousness. Educationally, it is something that
