In the editor's preface, obstetric medicine is defined as a subspecialty representing the fusion of information pertaining to the management of disorders ordinarily the province of the internist, made the concern of the obstetrician by pregnancy. Obstetrical contributions to the subspecialty consist of familiarity with the striking alterations of physiologic systems during pregnancy, and the rapidly growing body of information regarding evaluation of fetal well being, and timing and mode of delivery. The goal of this book is to provide obstetricians with information in instances in which an optimal medical consultant may be lacking. Only partial success is achieved due
