Sailing from the strains of The New World
Across the Atlantic
Home for a long deserved rest.
Years ago I hunted the forests of Austria
Listening for songs rising from the earth.
I captured them in five-railed fences
And penned them in my composition books.
When the fall came in 1907
Dr. Blumenthal auscultated the first murmurs
The babbling of a stream over the leaflets
Of a weakened heart.
Thereafter I conducted myself faithfully
Following the rhythms I felt within
Measuring my steps with great precision
To avoid the hectic palpitations.
