Eleven essay on a grab bag of topics. Three are clearly worth the attention of physicians. Thomasma's is entitled "The Goals of Medicine and Society" but is directly relevant to what a physician sees as the goals in his care for patients. Ruse takes a sociobiologic look at sex differences; certainly any physician should understand why sexual strategies and tactics differ in the two sexes. Coggins and Graham's short essay looks at the limits in clinical decisions and actions; why physicians should read it may be clear from the memorable aphorism with which it closes: "The doctor is doomed and privileged to do good in minute particulars, one patient at a time."
