Morgagnis "consultations" are little known outside the circles of medical historians; Benassi's edition was run off in only 500 copies and was largely ignored. The consultation documents, with allowances for differences between 18th and 20th century terms and practices, are strikingly similar to what today's consultant would write in a report to the referring physician, aside from probably gross differences in precision and elegance of prose style. It is hard, certainly, to know in many of the cases what disease Morgagni was seeing if we use today's diagnostic criteria. But here and there one can find clear descriptions of phenomena
