Little current general information on randomized controlled trials has been available from sources other than journal articles. In 1983, these two readable books on such trials appeared.
Bulpitt's elementary yet comprehensive reference manual could serve as an excellent text in an introductory course for clinicians. He defines a randomized controlled trial as "a carefully and ethically designed experiment which includes the provision of adequate and appropriate controls by a process of randomisation so that precisely framed questions can be answered." That definition indicates the broad scope of this practical guide to the design and performance of randomized controlled trials. The
