The editors of this book have a lofty view of their enterprise, which is captured in the title of the series, The New Medicine: An Integrated System of Study. Other volumes cover rheumatology, cardiology, otorhinolaryngology, hematology, obstetrics, and gastroenterology.
The editors' stated aim is to provide a text that fulfills three goals: Their first goal, "a more integrated approach to teaching," essentially involves incorporating medical and surgical treatments in the discussion of each disease.
