Although cerebrovascular diseases are a major cause of death and disability, little emphasis is given to their diagnosis and management in the medical curricula. According to Toole, 175 000 Americans each year die of cerebrovascular disease and another 200 000 are disabled. Of the 2 million persons affected by stroke, one third are younger than age 65.
A stirring preface refers to the meeting at Yalta of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin; all had cerebrovascular disease at the time. Roosevelt died 3 months later of a massive cerebral hemorrhage; Stalin, too, later died from the same cause.
