Choosing a bibliographic reference management system is not a simple task. The least expensive strategy is to modify a general purpose database system. However, this approach requires additional effort in designing a format appropriate for filing and retrieving references. Special programs dedicated to managing references can be used immediately and often provide a variety of special functions.
Reference Manager is such a dedicated database system. It allows one to enter references directly from the keyboard or from a text file containing references downloaded from MEDLINE or COLLEAGUE (using its Capture module). Several users can maintain their own files. The
