The appearance of this book shows the increasing interest in the medical problems of our aging population. Our book, The Aging Gut, was published in 1983 (Masson Publishing, Inc., New York), and another book on this topic is scheduled. Brandt's book is longer and comprehensive, whereas The Aging Gut focused on areas about which little had been written previously as well as the causes of excess mortality in the aging population, such as biliary tract disease and gastrointestinal bleeding. Brandt's book includes contributions by a pathologist and radiologist.
