One of these days some medical historian will measure the mass of the published literature on the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. By weight per year, the output is certainly staggering and, for a single limited entity, probably unprecedented. Several professional journals and symposia have tried to cope with such data overload by reviewing one segment of the disorder, as other sources have striven to provide overall surveys. The great joy of the present guide is that it accomplishes the latter task successfully and elegantly.
