The filing of torn-out articles and reprints must use some rational, clear, and convenient system of classification if retrieval of items is to be possible. Some filers construct their own systems, but it is usually easier to use an available system. Two readily available systems are those for the Excerpta Medica Sections and the tree-structure for the Medical Subject Headings of Index Medicus; both are numerical. The classification of Professor Chevallier, an alphanumeric system, would be adequate for any personal file and has a structure that can accommodate additions and new terms.
