A characteristic of modern medicine is the increasing reliance on quantitative methods. It is generally agreed that training in the mathematical sciences—especially statistics—will prove valuable not only for the medical researcher, but for the practicing physician as well. This book is the first volume of a projected two-volume series devoted to mathematical applications in medicine. This series is not meant to be a text, but a "guide-book" to how mathematics is used as a tool in medicine.
The editors have assembled material from 32 contributors into ten chapters. The range of topics includes statistical methods and computations, applications of statistics
