Exciting technological developments now permit the noninvasive measurement of myocardial function and coronary blood flow. In the near future noninvasive assessment of myocardial carbohydrate, amino-acid, and fatty acid metabolism, and the myocardial handling of drugs, may become widespread. The optimal use of such approaches increases the need for physicians to have a thorough understanding of the basic elements of cardiac physiology and pharmacology. Dr. Opie has undertaken the ambitious task of summarizing current knowledge in these fields. He has wide experience in research and teaching and writes in a succinct yet readable style.
