Besides handling office billing and cataloguing journal articles, the ready availability of microcomputers has made it possible to end time-consuming manual searches of Index Medicus. Many hospital professional libraries and most medical school libraries have access to computerized literature search-and-retrieval services. Physicians now have the option of asking a librarian to do a search or doing it themselves. The former requires little of the physician's time, but suffers from the difficulty in retrieving the exact references desired. The latter requires computer hardware, access to a bibliographic search service, and expertise.
