The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was recognized in 1981 as a distinct clinical entity, and the infectious nature of the disease soon became apparent. As the incidence of AIDS steadily increased, the need to bring together the many groups working on AIDS around the world to exchange information, ideas, and strategies for controlling this disease became clear. From this need developed the plans for the first International Conference on AIDS, held 14 through 17 April 1985 in Atlanta.
