Metronidazole has been used to treat some infections and Crohn's disease. We report the first case of pancreatitis caused by metronidazole; there was recurrence on rechallenge.
A 29-year-old black woman was first seen on 30 January 1984 with right upper quadrant abdominal and back pain of 3 days' duration. The patient had had a normal spontaneous vaginal delivery on 26 December 1983. Because of postpartum vaginal discharge and spotting, she had been started on metronidazole on 26 January 1984. The patient said she had not had pancreatitis, gallbladder, or liver disease; consumed ethanol recently; or previously used metronidazole. She had
