To the editor: Clinicians who wish to do their own MEDLINE searching should be aware that they need to consider several aspects of the search process. Haynes and associates ( 1 ) have compared the results of six search topics run by professional online searchers on 14 access routes. Whereas the contents of the MEDLINE database are basically the same whatever system is used, years of coverage and file segmentation, costs, software capabilities, bibliographic variations, and other databases loaded can influence the choice of system (2). Some of these points need elaboration.
The skill of a searcher is extremely important
