Most of the textbooks on infectious diseases stress clinical aspects and only superficially cover the essential parts of medical microbiology. The senior editor of this book, the late Dr. Abraham Braude, believed that the study of medical microbiology and clinical infectious diseases were inseparable. He combined both areas and published the first edition of this book in 1981. Much has happened in the past 5 years in infectious diseases, and it is timely to have a second edition.
