The 2-year-long study on the future of the academic health center, sponsored by the Commonwealth Fund (1), is now complete and presents some concrete, sensible proposals for resolving the problems facing these institutions. The report of the task force deals with graduate medical education, health care for the poor, and future financing of the teaching hospital. The issues are so closely interrelated that they can only be dealt with separately to a limited degree, but the task force has done an unusually effective job of dissecting the components.
