To the editor: We read with interest the position paper of the Health and Public Policy Committee, "Diagnostic Thoracentesis and Pleural Biopsy in Pleural Effusions" (1). Because our group is especially dedicated to the study of pleural effusions, and particularly to the introduction of new bloodless methods for the diagnosis of pleural tuberculosis, we think it important to contribute the following specific points and criticisms.
In relation to the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusions, the authors limit themselves to commenting on the low diagnostic sensitivity of culture of the pleural fluid for identifying Mycobacterium tuberculosis and on the great value
