Since its initial recognition in June 1981, the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has achieved epidemic proportions. With more physicians seeing this disease and with a dauntingly large medical literature, there is a real need for books that can summarize what is known and guide the clinician in patient management. This need is beginning to be filled. Since 1984, several books on AIDS have been published. Unfortunately, with rapid increases in our knowledge of this disease, some of these books are already out of date.
