To the editor: The International Committee on Thrombosis and Haemostasis of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis is deeply involved in the standardization of hemostatic and fibrinolytic agents. At its recent meeting, concern was expressed about the various units used for tissue plasminogen activator. Three units have been used for reporting the doses of this agent: International Units of urokinase; milligrams; and International Units of tissue plasminogen activator. This situation will predictably lead to problems.
In the original studies, partially purified preparations of tissue plasminogen activator were compared in potency to the international standard of urokinase and reported in
