A position paper ( 1 ) in this issue documents problems with education on the use of drugs in therapeutics. The number and potency of drugs have increased dramatically in the last 40 years. During clinical training, the traditional emphasis on making a correct diagnosis has not been accompanied by equal emphasis on developing the best therapeutic plan, and medical students and house-staff are not adequately trained in the principles of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics and, as young physicians, are poorly prepared to integrate new developments in drug therapy into their pharmaceutical armamentarium.
