The huge number of medical books published yearly virtually precludes assessment of their relative merits by busy physicians. To help them and hospital librarians in selecting books in internal medicine and the related fields, the American College of Physicians has published at 3-yearly intervals beginning in 1973 a selective list of books and journals, "A Library for Internists" (1-5).
The process of selecting titles for this sixth version of the list began with requests to publishers to nominate books for possible selection. Publishers were limited to one nomination for each category. Recommendations for the list were also
