The introduction discusses the use of probability theory in applying diagnostic tests. The rest of the chapters develop detailed guidelines and recommendations for the most efficient use of widely used tests and studies, including serum enzyme assays for myocardial infarction, routine electrocardiograms and chest radiographs, arterial blood gas analyses, coagulation tests, blood cultures, tests for syphilis, throat cultures, urinalysis and urine culture, carcinoembryonic antigen, serum electrolytes, renal-function tests, and biochemical profiles.
