The sense of urgency that most clinicians feel when asked to interpret the electrocardiogram of a critically ill patient is nicely conveyed in the title of this text. However, rather than presenting a diagnostic algorithm or a problem-oriented approach that would help in the rapid assessment of such tracings, this book takes us on a thoughtful and reasonably complete journey through the myriad of rhythm abnormalities and conduction disturbances that can (and do) appear in hospitalized patients. The introductory section describes the basic pathophysiologic abnormalities underlying the rhythm disturbances and a brief chapter discusses antiarrhythmic drugs (including dosing regimens). The
