JOSEPH GOODGOLD, M.D.
To the editor: Although I was disturbed when I originally read the review of Stroke Rehabilitation (1) by Dr. McDowell (2), I did not write to the journal in recognition of the propriety of a reviewer rendering a personal opinion. I am writing now, however, because I have read practically the same commentary by the same reviewer in a recent issue of The New England Journal of Medicine (3). It is astonishing that the reviewer accepted the responsibility in two such prestigious journals that reach a wide but similar audience and thereby deny the authors the equity of independent appraisal
