Dr. Odegaard has written a thoughtful book full of warmth and wisdom about medicine. It is no news that biomedicine is under attack. It is noteworthy, however, when an educator of Dr. Odegaard's repute (a historian and former university president with much experience in medical policy issues) joins those questioning the scientific base of modern medicine. He has presented a most persuasive argument for change.
Odegaard traces medicine's excessive reliance on the biological sciences to a spirit of misguided objectivity in the modern university. He next defines medical science (". . .medicine remains scientific to the extent that its concepts,
