To the editor: We report the cases of three patients on chronic hemodialysis treated concomitantly by aluminum hydroxide and allopurinol for high uric acid and phosphate concentration. Initially the uric acid blood concentration did not change; allopurinol was then given 3 hours before the aluminum hydroxide, and there was a decrease in uric acid concentration.
A 21-year-old woman receiving hemodialysis was given allopurinol, 300 mg/d, concomitantly with aluminum hydroxide, 5.7 g/d. After 1 month of combined therapy the uric acid concentration was 25.7 mg/dL. She was advised to allow 3 hours between the aluminum hydroxide and allopurinol. One month later
