To the Editor: Having worked with Dr. Phil Manning while he was writing his recent book Medicine: Preserving the Passion (1) and being privy to his thoughts about it, I must express disappointment with the book review that appeared in the February 1988 issue. The book is intended to be a practical guide for the clinician, since it describes techniques and methods that physicians in practice can use to improve knowledge and enhance skills. The book is not mainly directed towards physicians "with an academic interest in the process and content of medical education."
The authors intended to show that
