Expertise in the clinical management of persons with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has been concentrated in a relatively small portion of the health care profession. As the epidemic spreads, more physicians and health care workers will need basic information on the diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive aspects of these infections. Much of the literature on AIDS has been highly specialized, and general reference works are needed. Both of these books are directed to this need.
