Critically ill patients present many unique and complex challenges to clinicians who use pharmacologic interventions in the management of such patients. The intensity of illness, often multisystem in nature, frequently requires the concurrent administration of many potent and toxic drugs. Furthermore, this polypharmacy is often complicated by pharmacokinetic perturbations resulting from impaired renal, hepatic, or cardiac function. This book, now in its second edition, attempts to synthesize the currently available information on this subject into a comprehensive resource; it aims to help physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals optimize the pharmacologic management of the critically ill patient.
