I took my daughter to see the leaves—
New England leaves in fall.
She collected them, she counted them,
She relished them.
As we were riding home she said:
Why are dying leaves so
Beautiful? And she pronounced it well.
Perhaps, I said
Perhaps because dying unfolds the beauty
That's always there?
She fingered them, and said:
Are dying people so ... ?
I thought of a lady. Then several persons more.
Sometimes. I said. Sometimes they are.
Why, Yes. I said, and shared a smile with her.
