Family practice is a specialty in breadth, not depth, and the strengths and weaknesses of this book follow suit. Its strengths lie in the broad coverage of matters such as the history of the family practice movement and the psychosocial issues of the family life cycle. The weaknesses come mainly from the in-depth treatment of organ systems in chapters written by generalist physicians.
In the chapter on the musculoskeletal system, for example, only three paragraphs discuss low back pain; no mention of indications for surgery, chiropractic manipulation, or the new kneeling position orthopedic chairs is made. With the exception of
