Obesity is a common and complex disease that presents a therapeutic dilemma for all physicians. Health implications of obesity were reviewed at a National Institutes of Health Concensus Development Conference in which it was emphasized that excess body fat is more than a cosmetic problem and affects more than the massively obese. Practitioners who assume obese patients are simply gluttons who deserve the 1000-calorie-a-day diet handout contribute to the poor therapeutic efficacy of obesity.
