Phencyclidine abuse remains a major problem particularly in urban centers. Regarding the management of phenycyclidine intoxication, recommendations have been made to hasten elimination of phencyclidine by urine acidification (1-3). However, more recent pharmacokinetic studies suggest that phencyclidine is cleared primarily by metabolism and has a large volume of distribution (6.2 L/kg) (4, 5). The pharmacokinetics of phenyclidine after massive overdosage have not been characterized. This report details the time course of plasma phencyclidine concentrations in a patient who had severe symptoms after massive overdosage. These phencyclidine levels represent the highest ever reported for a survivor of phencyclidine intoxication.
