During the past few years, studies in the Himalayas and other high-altitude regions, as well as those using hypobaric chambers, have markedly increased our knowledge of the effects of high altitude on humans. The results of these studies, however, are available only in journals and multiauthored symposium proceedings. Few monographs provide a systematic review. Thus, this book by Heath and Williams is a welcome addition. Originally published in 1977 as Man at High Altitude, the current revision has a larger format; more chapters; more than twice as many excellent photographs, graphs and tables; and several new features as well.
