Patients with Hodgkin disease are at risk for life-threatening Haemophilus influenzae infections (1, 2). Splenectomy interferes with opsonization and phagocytosis of encapsulated bacteria (3), and chemotherapy and irradiation impair serologic response to polysaccharide antigen (2, 4, 5). Response to protein antigen remains relatively intact (6). The H. influenzae polyribose polysaccharide diphtheria protein-conjugate vaccine has been used to overcome the inability of infants to respond to polysaccharide antigen (7, 8). To determine whether splenectomized patients with Hodgkin disease could also respond we immunized 23 patients with conjugate vaccine.
