To the Editor: I read with great interest the article by Dr. Garber and colleagues (1) on the role of cholesterol screening in asymptomatic adults. On the advice of the National Cholesterol Education Program, the entire nation has embarked on a crusade to lower serum cholesterol. Recently, however, several heated debates have erupted regarding the scientific basis of these recommendations. Consequently, I was eager to read the Stanford group's assessment of the literature and hoped that their review might clarify controversies attributable to conflicting interpretations of existing data.
