When a textbook gets to a third edition, that fact is itself likely to be proof of its great value. Clinical Methods clearly deserves its reputation. It is an encyclopedic text but it is not a pedantic and academic compilation. Many of its chapters carry ample evidence of their authors' clinical savoir-faire, abounding as they do with the pithy kind of experiential wisdom often labeled "pearls." It is too big a text for digestion by most medical students, but the essence needed for an introduction to clinical procedure and interpretation is carried in "overview" chapters that open each section.
