Covered with husks and wasted seeds
the drought field unfolds in the corner,
beneath the canary cage
already the newspapers yellow.
The headlines say we're going to mars,
while stealth and guns and crack
take the young in arms,
their bellies rife with parasites.
Yet one stands before tanks
and reaches toward knowledge
and water in the sand.
For the starving children
beyond the square
where the sun sets round,
stars turn to ash and fall
in waves like flags,
and the red blood runs
bright on broken bone china.
