Annals has a long involvement with clinical guidelines, having published one of the earliest examples in 1982 (1). In this issue are two articles about clinical guidelines. Audet and colleagues (2) review the current status of practice guidelines. They point out that guidelines are being vigorously promoted by many elements of society but that more attention should be paid to their implementation and to the effectiveness of guidelines in practice settings.
