To the Editors: Annals recently published an editorial by Lowensteinand Hunt (1) on injury. Most of what they say seems reasonable except in their discussion of suicide. The authors state that they believe that screening for a "suicide intent" ought to be done. It is fine to mention such things, and they have been mentioned to me since I was a house officer 25 years ago. To date, I have never, ever had any guidelines on how to predict suicide, what to look for, or how to certify that a certain person is unlikely to commit suicide.
