To the Editors: I enjoyed Dr. LaCombe's article. It struck a particular note because I had just finished interviewing a resident applicant who wondered why I enjoy doing what I do. I specifically mentioned that over the course of my practice, I had become not merely a professional consultant to my patients but also a friend to most of them. I told the applicant that I suspected that this would happen to him in his three years of residency. I tried to indicate, in very few minutes, how much this experience would enrich his learning and practice. It obviously has
