Two types of residency training programs are found in U.S. hospitals: There are those programs staffed by graduates of U.S. medical schools (USMGs) and those staffed by graduates of foreign medical schools (FMGs). This two-tiered system seems at first glance to be inconsistent with the marked increases in both the number of medical schools (from 89 in 1965 to 127 in 1985) and the number of medical students (30 300 in 1960 to 65 500 in 1980).
