Wide and deep reflections on the meaning of the body and its parts for the society contemporary with Henri de Monde ville, fourteenth century surgeon and author of Chirurgie, the classic medieval text on surgery. The author's explorations include the division between medicine and surgery, the physician's and the surgeon's concepts of the body, and views in later centuries. The analysis takes Chirurgie as the starting point.
