One hundred and sixty-two authors consider one hundred fifteen disorders and syndromes which frequently, but not always, present complex problems in care, including acute renal failure, ascites, congestive heart failure, human immunodeficiency virus-related disease, recurrent urinary tract infections. The best chapters confine themselves to management; some chapters provide more attention to background (mechanisms, clinical presentations, and so on) than is really needed for decisions in care. Each chapter closes with selected references.
