Establishing and maintaining effective physician-patient relationships are key elements of successful medical care. Over the past decade, investigators have examined how physicians behave in physician-patient interactions and how satisfied patients are with this behavior. Despite the belief that patients often find physicians lacking in humanistic qualities, researchers have consistently reported a high degree of satisfaction among patients with their own physicians. Not surprisingly, patients value both technical competence and humanistic qualities highly.
Teaching these behaviors remains a challenge for medical educators. This videotape was developed to illustrate appropriate "bedside manners" or desirable physician behaviors, as indicated by Dr. Matthews' research
Bedside Manners: A Comprehensive Approach for Establishing and Maintaining Effective Relationships with Patients. Ann Intern Med. 1991;114:1068. doi: 10.7326/0003-4819-114-12-1068_1
