Fifteen essays, 13 of which are informal and highly readable accounts of some major medical discoveries such as the diuretic effect of an organic mercurial, penicillin as an antimicrobial agent, the polio vaccines, the cause of legionnaire disease, and cardiac defibrillation. Includes a bibliography of both primary and secondary sources. Written for a general audience but will be enjoyed by physicians who know little of the history of 20th century medicine.
